My Homemade Electricity Success Story

Before jumping into  my Homemade Electricity project I wanted to be sure that I could actually make this happen.  I didn’t know anyone that had done a similar project, BUT I found a great guide for producing homemade energy – if you’re interested, click here.

Having a detailed resource along with videos gave me a lot of confidence to give this whole thing a try.  My wife definitely thought I was crazy since I’m NOT a handyman whatsoever.

However, my homemade electricity project was much easier than I could have hoped.

I successfully made and installed several solar panels over 1 weekend.

I relied heavily on my guide, especially for what resources to buy and some suggestions on where to get them for cheap.

Once I got my resources, it was really just a matter of setting aside some time and following directions on how to create and install the panels.

Overall, I’m very proud that I went ahead with this homemade power project and made it a reality.  I’m saving my family money and I’ve got the ‘greenest’ house on the block.

If you’re thinking about giving something similar a try, here’s my advice:

Go for it!!  You’ve got nothing to lose and a lot to gain.  Everything is low cost and it won’t take much work to make homemade energy a reality.

I recommend that you get yourself a good resource and start right away!!

Homemade Power Makes a Difference

This site is all about homemade electricity and I one question I get often is ‘does it really make a difference?

The easiest way to see the difference our homemade electricity is making in our lives is in our energy bill.

I went back and reviewed some of energy bills from last year and they are WAY down.  As a safe estimate, we are saving 40% per month on our energy bill.  This adds up really quick folks!!

One great thing about homemade energy is that you do the work upfront and then can reap the benefits every month.

But money wasn’t my only motivation for taking on my homemade electricity project.  I definitely considered the benefits of going green and the positive impact it would have on the environment.

And, I’m not a scientist, but based on the numbers I’ve seen, the amount of energy used by just 1 family per year is huge.  So, with our reduced dependency on the grid, I can confidently say that we ARE making a difference on the environment.  Everyday, our home uses renewable resources instead of coal to generate our electricity!!

So, was it worth it?  You bet – I learned a lot, save money every month and am making a difference.

Benefits of Homemade Electricity

This is why we care about homemade electricity, right?  It’s the benefits…

Some are a bit self served (save money)

Some are to benefit the world (help the environment)

For some people, either one of these reasons is enough to make the effort to produce homemade energy.  Put them both together, and a homemade power supply is a must.

On the point of saving money, keep this in mind:

There will definitely be some upfront costs and I think this discourage a lot of people from going the homemade energy route.  But, if you are willing to do some of the work yourself, you can do this for REALLY cheap.

And like I said, if you’re not comfortable jumping in and doing this all yourself, get yourself this helpful guide and it will take you everything you need, supplies, step-by-step instructions, video tutorials, etc

And a little more on helping the environment

Don’t underestimate the impact YOU can have.  The statistics on how much energy one family uses are staggering, so by you alone using green/homemade energy you WILL make a big difference.

But also consider that this whole process spreads

One somebody sees what you’re doing, they’ll ask questions, get inspired, and maybe they’ll go the homemade energy route too.  In my case, several of my neighbors, friends, and relatives are using some form of homemade power now that they’ve seen how easy it was for me to setup.

So go for it, save some money and make a positive impact on the environment.

Going Green

Green energy is definitely a buzz word these days.  Basically, it refers to sustainable and renewable energy.  Green energy is any way of producing energy that does not harm the environment

Yes, there are a lot of types of green energy, some are even debatable (ie. you will find some people that think nuclear energy is green).  The green energy I’m interested in is a) produced by a resource that will not run out b) producing the energy doesn’t do any lasting damage to the environment and c) is accessible to the average person.

The main reason I even bring this up is that when we look at different homemade electricity options we are going to be choosing a type of green energy and then looking at way to produce that power on our own.

Homemade Electricity Basics

When we talk about homemade electricity, I’m talking about energy that you are generating at home and most people think of solar power.  In general homemade power falls into 3 categories:

1)  Solar Energy generated by building or buying solar panels and then installing them at your home.

2)  Wind Energy generated by building or buying a wind turbine and installing it.

3)  Battery generated power

If you want to save money, you’ll go the route of building everything your stuff.

Doing the build yourself will be the cheaper route so that is what I’m going to focus on here.  If you don’t know what you’re doing (like me when I started) I suggest buying a guide (here’s the best I’ve seen) – it’s way cheaper than purchasing your panels or turbine outright and it will take you through every single step you need to do the setup.

I’m most experienced with homemade Solar Energy and homemade Wind Energy.  I’ve seen first hand how easy it can be to get them setup and running and just how much money they can save.

Background

Welcome and I hope you’re interested in homemade electricity.  I think you’ll find this site helpful.

First, just a little background about me:

I’m a software engineer in Madison, WI.  I love spending time outdoors and am always looking for ways to ‘go green’.

I had to search hard to figure out how to produce homemade energy without spending a lot of money.

Hopefully, this site will save you work and money.
